Are rural hospitals "strategic"?
Article Abstract:
The critical environmental/organizational problems which rural hospitals are experiencing are studied through logistic regression models. These problems include the hospitals' weaker economy, high unemployment rate, lower per capita income, high labor costs and deteriorating facilities. Data on rural hospitals taken from US Census Bureau's 'Metropolitan Statistical Areas' are analyzed. The findings indicate that some hospitals are able to operate under very difficult environmental and organizational conditions, that some are unable to react in a timely manner and that lack of strategic changes can be due to organizational inertia and perceptions that changes are unnecessary.
