CEOs: Trustees need financial savvy
Article Abstract:
Members of hospital boards of trustees must be knowledgable about finance in these times when reimbursement and financing methods are changing frequently. CEOs from 250 hospitals who were surveyed thought their trustees were well prepared and informed about hospital finance. The trustees, often executives from diverse industries, are able to transfer their knowledge of their own companies' financial workings to the health care situation. Most boards have a mix of people, with many relevant skills.

Physician CEOs: ranks continue to grow
Article Abstract:
About 10% of hospital chief executive officers are physicians, and the numbers are increasing. Sixty-seven percent of physician CEOs surveyed believe that their knowledge of medicine and credibility with staff aid them in their jobs, while 32% feel that their lack of business expertise is a disadvantage. Although many hospitals would like to employ physician CEOs, only large hospitals can afford their high salary. Physician CEOs at hospitals with 500 beds or more averaged $315,860.

Health care reform: nursing's vision of change
Article Abstract:
Health care reform offers nurses the possibility of expanding their roles. For example, nurses could work to provide a basic level of primary care to the large number of uninsured Americans. However, while nursing associations would like to enlarge the role of nursing, physician organizations argue that nurses are not properly trained to practice medicine. The views on nursing and health care reform proposals of a number of different medical groups are discussed.
