Article Abstract:
Implications of cocaine abuse by pregnant mothers for fetuses and newborns are not fully understood, though early detection and intervention continue to be the objectives in caring for cocaine-exposed infants. Central nervous system irritation, apnea, feeding difficulties, and cardiac anomalies are among the conditions to be noted and cared for.

Substance abuse by pregnant women: legal and ethical concerns
Article Abstract:
Courts in 24 states have attempted to prosecute pregnant women abusing various drugs on the grounds that this behavior endangers their fetuses. Perinatal and neonatal nurses need to carefully consider the rights, responsibilities and autonomy of pregnant women to educate them about potentially harmful behaviors.

Understanding drug testing in the neonate and the role of meconium analysis
Article Abstract:
Feces from newborns offer a promising means to identify the drugs to which pregnant women and their infants were exposed to. There are several barriers to accurately determining the nature of drug exposure and meconium analysis is proving to be the most accurate method.
