Commentary on "The challenges of governing integrated health care systems." (comment on article by J.A. Alexander, H.S. Zuckerman and D.D. Pointer in this issue, p. 69)
Article Abstract:
A new type of hospital governance is required with the advent of changes in the healthcare industry, such as the emergence of multiinstitutional systems in the 1970s and integration in the 1980s. Hospital governance as it has been in the past 50 years needs to adapt to these changes. A major result of these changes is the shift in the organization's purpose, from assisting the physician in patient care to extending care to all who come for medical care.
