Considerations in establishing visiting consultant clinics in rural hospital communities
Article Abstract:
Rural health service providers often contract with visiting consultants to provide patients with specialized care, usually by urban-based physicians. A study of visiting consultant clinics in Iowa reveals that increasing numbers of specialists are willing to expand their patient load by acting as consultants in spite of the travel time involved. Also, training opportunities may be offered rural hospital staff, including nurses, technicians and physicians' assistants.

U.S. hospital workforce-to-population ratios by service area
Article Abstract:
The healthcare industry is focusing on health maintenance and prevention of a covered population. With the shift in focus, traditional hospital productivity measures must be supplemented with new ratios predicated upon the provision of healthcare as a sum of hospital labor resources divided by the population. An analysis of hospital workforce-to-population ratios by service area is presented.
