From stumbling to building: comeback hospital continues its quest
Article Abstract:
Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown, NC, established its Bladen Healthwatch to curb the high infant mortality rate of that rural area. The effort, which has earned it a NOVA Award, is part of a seven-year renewal program for Bladen County Hospital. The 62-bed hospital belongs to the Balden Community Care Network, which is developing a variety of wellness and prevention programs. The Healthwatch program has already helped turn a 10-woman quilting bee into a 40-member community action group.

Trouble in the backyard: Presbyterian reaches out to its neighbors

Presbyterian Healthcare System in Dallas, TX, has won a NOVA award for establishing its Community Ministries & Outreach Program to benefit the Vickery Meadow Community. Presbyterian gathered support from community businesses and landowners and succeeded in getting $26,000 from the Dallas City Council. Health projects that Presbyterian has focused on include a quarterly immunization clinic, a day camp for children, an after-school care program and a classroom health education program.

Ocean County where? One search for a healthier future
Article Abstract:
Ocean County, NJ's, Community Medical Center in Toms River has won a NOVA award for its visionary planning in the care of the large number of senior citizens and poor, single-parent families of the area. The center has merged with Kimball Medical Center to form Community-Kimball Healthcare System. The hospital targeted four needy groups regarding health services and established a community health assessment project. Its senior center now serves 30,000 people per year.
