The need to diversify hospital services that take advantage of current health care needs is an important marketing challenge for hospitals. The hospital that can distribute services throughout the community will be able to compete with more flexibility in the health care market.

The Leo J. Shapiro and Associates completed a survey for the Society for Hospital Planning. A general profile of planners was developed. Hospital planners tend to be self-confident, effective persuaders, and have developed strategic planning skills.
