Do people shift their use of health services over time to take advantage of insurance?
Article Abstract:
The transitory demand hypothesis proved to be insignificant in explaining the relationship between insurance coverage and health service usage. The hypothesis, which claims that people plan their health care service use in preparation to modifications in their insurance coverage, was found to be invalid based on an analysis of data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation. The hypothesis claiming that people select or change insurance coverage as a result of an expectation that their general health care needs will change was also found to be unreliable.
