Do physicians and hospitals share capitation?
Article Abstract:
Only 29% of 250 hospital CEOs polled said that their hospital conducted capitated contracting with one or more physician groups. Capitation was especially unpopular in rural areas, where the small volume of patients made the plan financially unattractive. Physicians often object to the idea because they believe that it removes financial incentives and control over their practice. However, hospitals such as New Jersey's St. Barnabas Medical Center are succeeding with capitated reimbursement by working with physicians to consider the financial interests of both parties.

Changing cultures: hospital staffs get used to patient-centered care plans
Article Abstract:
Hospital CEOs surveyed about management of patient-centered care initiatives report that employees were at first threatened because of the fear of change. Stepped-up communications including feedback from staff members, care-givers and all hospital personnel can smooth the transition from traditional methods. Hospital executives relate their experiences in promoting the program to personnel at Hinsdale Hospital, Hinsdale, IL, St. Vincent Hospitals and Health Services, Indianapolis, IN, and other institutions.

Putting patients first: hospitals work to define patient-centered care
Article Abstract:
Hospital CEOs who promote patient-centered care claim that benefits include reduced personnel turnover, streamlined admission processing and shorter waiting time for outpatients, according to results of a survey by ServiceMaster Co and Hospitals magazine. However, many of the 311 CEOs surveyed reject the program, which stresses organizing hospital care around the patient rather than hospital departments. Experiences of individual institutions with the program are described.
