The infection control specialist's role in an hospital intensive care unit is to research the best measures to prevent infectious outbreaks, assure that best practices are in place to avoid infection, and to track outbreaks and find ways to stop them as soon as possible.

Article Abstract:
More research is needed into how hospitals can prevent infections from vacomycin-resistant enterococcus and other drug resistant infections. As more and more infections become resistant, the first line of defense is better prevention. New drugs are being developed that may fight these infections in the future.

Protocols for the prevention of intravascular device-related infections
Article Abstract:
Infections from intravenous therapy procedures are a common source of infection in intensive care unit patients but they can be prevented with careful attention to proper medical procedures. Those procedures include complete handwashing, wearing a complete set of protective clothing, use of skin disinfectants and sterile dressings and careful surveillance.
