Energetic thoughts
Article Abstract:
Health care organizations are expected to save $45 million in energy costs over five years by taking part in the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) "Green Lights" program. The voluntary program provides healthcare organizations with free access to lighting technology, financing information and a personal account manager to facilitate lighting orders and upgrades. The use of the efficient lighting technology also reduces carbon dioxide pollution. The EPA provides hospitals with positive publicity if they take part in the program.

Consumers will have the last word on reform
Article Abstract:
Hospitals should be making an effort to get consumers' support for approaching health care reforms by holding local discussions and involving consumers in the decisions that must be made. Consumers are most concerned with how reforms will affect them on a personal level, and hospitals must address these issues through education and the formation of community-based health networks that are accountable to the public. The public will support health care reforms if they believe that the health care industry is on their side.

A trip to our health care future
Article Abstract:
Hospitals must consider community health standards as well as quality of inpatient care when assessing their effectiveness in providing health care. Hospital administrators should step outside of their facilities to see the many Americans that are not receiving proper health care. This part of the community must be served as well, and outreach programs and outpatient services can help improve health status. The American Hospital Association has been active in promoting this type of care.
