Ex-hospital CEOs
Article Abstract:
Several hospital chief executives have left their jobs in search of better paying or more satisfying employment. While most hospital executives find other employment in other hospitals, opportunities are increasing for executives to move into other health care companies and even non-health care businesses. With increasing hospital consolidation, CEOs should be flexible and well-rounded enough to work in several health care areas.

Measuring the results of faith
Article Abstract:
Daily pastoral care can have marked effects on the recovery of cardiac patients, according to a 30-month study conducted at a Veterans Affairs Hospital in Brockton, MA. Assigning chaplains by specialty, rather than denomination, allows clergy to play a greater role in patient recovery. BJC Health Systems has developed a spiritual care council to work on implementing pastoral care programs throughout the system.

Safety in numbers
Article Abstract:
The Internal Revenue Service has modified a rule that restricted hospital tax exemption to institutions with no more than 20% of board positions held by physicians who work for the hospital or own stock in it. The new rules require that interested persons leave the room when possible conflict of interest arises. Nonprofit hospitals need this modification to successfully compete with for-profit systems.
