HMOs on the move
Article Abstract:
Both shareholders and business coalitions are putting pressure on HMOs to become more cost-effective through mergers and consolidations, resulting in intense competition in the health care industry. Most expanding HMOs should expect to lose up to $7 million before their position has been established in a community and they begin to profit. Physicians Corp. of America has moved into Puerto Rico and anticipates 900,000 members by January 1996. HMOs are most likely to profit in areas like Puerto-Rico, where populations are growing and health care is limited.

S.O.S.(Save Our Societies): do state medical associations have a chance for survival in a world that's gone managed care-crazy?
Article Abstract:
Medical societies are having a difficult time keeping members interested and involved, as more doctors enter managed care environments. In response, these associations are redesigning their programs to become more active in the managed care scene, but these attempts to change may be too little too late and may not succeed. Much of the focus is to gain back control through operations, but the market no longer responds to union-like organizations.

Boxed in?
Article Abstract:
Health maintenance organizations (HMO) are increasingly using advanced practice nurses (APN) and physicians' assistants (PA) to deliver primary health care services that traditionally have been performed by physicians. According to a survey by the Group Health Assn of America, about two-thirds of 58 HMOs employ APNs and that 70% use APNs and PAs as primary care providers.
