Hospital prices outpace inflation

The US Bureau of Labor statistics consumer price index (CPI) showed that the rates charged for services to patient who were not covered by private insurance, rose 5.6% in 2003. The prices charged to insurers for general medical and surgical hospitals rose 5.7% in 2003.

Operating outlook should improve in 2004
Article Abstract:
The US hospital industry saw mixed operating trends in the year 2003 due to an unusually strong flu season. The hospitals expect that a sustained pick-up in employment growth should support a similar rise in admissions volume in the year 2004.

Hospital profits suffer as self-pay rises
Article Abstract:
The effects of the 2004 US economic downturn and sustained unemployment would badly effect the profits for the nation's hospital industry. Challenges for hospital operators would include a rising proportion of self-pay and uninsured patients.
