Hospitals strive to provide communities with benefits
Article Abstract:
Hospitals are increasingly joining community benefit standard programs due to a new emphasis on public accountability and to help them survive IRS scrutiny. A community benefit standard program assures that a hospital demonstrates its commitment to serving its community in accordance with a number of formal standards. Community community benefit standard initiatives are operating in three organizations: New York University; the Catholic Health Assn in St. Louis, MO; and Voluntary Hospital of America in Irving, TX.

Riots in Los Angeles; being prepared: a lesson well-learned for area facilities
Article Abstract:
Los Angeles hospitals coped with the 1992 riots in a variety of ways. Many had to house the families of staff members to ensure their safety or provide transportation through dangerous areas when the bus system broke down. There were problems with vendors delivering supplies and the Red Cross delivering blood. The history of how several Los Angeles-area hospitals managed during the crisis is presented, along with a list of short-term strategies for hospital administrators to use during such an event.
