Kaiser goes globe-trotting

Officials of the Russian healthcare system asked for assistance from Kaiser Permanente, also called the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Inc. Kaiser set up an international advisory service and sent Stanley Tillinghast to help Russia correct widespread deficiencies in care and improve administration of prescription drugs. The international unit also expects to serve as a consultant for not-for-profit health care in other countries.

Employees who have unpleasant experiences with their health care plan may have increased leverage as health care plans compete with each other for the business of large employers. In some markets, such as Los Angeles, prices are expected to become nearly identical among the plans. Consequently, factors such as patient satisfaction will become more important than before as employers negotiate a plan for their workers.

The Albuquerque, NM, health system is hoping to improve efficiency and quality of care by making its medical group, hospital system and health plans autonomous.
