Leadership incentives: support, education and pay attract medical staff leaders
Article Abstract:
Chiefs of staff at hospitals once received no pay for their services, but that is changing. Because the job is more demanding than in the past, some hospitals are beginning to compensate their chiefs of staff and support them in other ways. For example, medical chiefs of staff should receive litigation protection. In addition, they should be made an integral and meaningful part of hospital planning and management. Hospitals should also offer them a specific job description and use their time carefully. Additional techniques for supporting medical chiefs of staff are discussed.
