Yonkers General Hospital, in Yonkers, NY, embarked in 1997 on a renewal program including recruiting new doctors and a new ceo, Jim Foy. Located in a rundown neighborhood, the hospital provides health services to needy persons, some of them social outcasts. In addition to winning a state grant for $1 million, Foy succeeded in securing financial assistance from venders.

Bay Area Medical Center, in Marinette WI, hired Rick Ament as CEO after a failed inspection, adverse publicity and complaints from patients. Determined to focus on patient services, Ament appointed a task force to plan, perform and check results of improvements in quality of care. Bay Area also cooperates with Aurora Health Care System, based in Milwaukee.
