Memorial Hospital: rebuilding physician, community support
Article Abstract:
Memorial Hospital in Palestine, TX, recovered from near failure in 1987 by petitioning the county to transfer governance of the hospital to an independent foundation which when established, hired a new business manager. The new manager improved the hospital's finances, and operating income rose to $3 million in 1992 from $242,000 in 1990. The hospital's turnaround was mainly due to its success in determining what the community needed and providing it. It established free health screenings, a heart and lung clinic, breast-exam education and a mobile health unit that covers five counties. The hospital began building a new 100,000 sq ft facility in Jun 1993.

Stoughton (WI) Hospital
Article Abstract:
Stoughton Hospital, Stoughton, WI, recovered from deteriorating finances by reorganizing its executive management team and developing a three-year plan. The plan's objectives included establishing excellence in all hospital departments, developing services that would increase use of the facility and development of a marketing strategy that would focus on the hospital's areas of excellence and its technical abilities. Public forums helped Stoughton emphasize areas that better served the communities needs. Stoughton had a $252,000 operating loss in 1990, and by 1992 had a profit of $377,000.
