New AHA guidebook provides framework for implementing clinical practice guidelines
Article Abstract:
The American Hospital Assn (AHA) clinical practice guidelines are based on the experience of three hospitals: Mercy Health Services' St Joseph Hospital, Ann Arbor, MI; Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital, Stanford, CA; and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. Each hospital must identify its needs and then establish an oversight committee, usually from the medical staff. Physicians and administrators should collaborate on changes and modifications to selected guidelines. Implementation should be followed by evaluation of results and continued feedback to consider possible technology improvements.

Surveying customer needs, not satisfaction, is crucial to CQI
Article Abstract:
Hospital quality control can be improved by using more exacting tools for gathering information. For example, open-ended survey questions geared to a particular department are more useful than yes/no-type questions. Dialog with physicians and staff is helpful in measuring service quality in technical areas. A number of innovations are improving quality control, such as portable computers that allow patients to register evaluations day or night. The data can then be analyzed according to such factors as time registered or the gender of the patient.

New approaches to developing physician leaders
Article Abstract:
Medical staffs are investigating new ways to help physicians perform effectively in voluntary hospital leadership roles. Councils of past chief advisors can act as mentors to incoming chiefs of staff or other leaders. Some medical staffs are initiating leadership development activities one to two years before the leadership position is to be filled. In addition, medical staffs are providing manuals about staff organization and function and position descriptions to clarify new leaders' responsibilities.
