Out in front: managed care helps push clinical guidelines forward
Article Abstract:
A wide range of organizations are attempting to formulate practice guidelines for use by managed care organizations, hospitals and other providers. Managed care organizations are already tracking physicians on preventative and primary care and rewarding them for adhering to guidelines. Some managed care providers are working together to evaluate and reconcile conflicting guidelines. In planning practice guidelines, physician involvement is crucial, and other factors, such as institutional goals, must also be considered.

Learning from experience: in AIDS treatment, knowledge means quality
Article Abstract:
Hospitals that treat a high number of AIDS patients have a much lower AIDS mortality rate than hospitals that see few AIDS patients. For example, a study of 257 patients treated for AIDS-related pneumonia found a 33% mortality rate in low-experienced hospitals and a 12% mortality rate in high-experienced hospitals. The study's authors propose educating hospital staff in low-experienced hospitals to recognize the symptoms of AIDS and the proper treatment of opportunistic infections.
