Patient and hospital characteristics associated with average length of stay
Article Abstract:
The average length of stay (ALOS) of patients in hospitals depends on the characteristics of patients, physician and hospitals. Patients characteristics include health and marital status, insurance coverage and race. Hospital characteristics are size, ownership and geographic location and physician factors including degree of specialization, age, medical school background and practice setting. The effects of ALOS on hospital cost reduction is minimal because of fixed costs imposed by most managed care firms.

Where have all the primary care physicians gone? A Socratic discourse
Article Abstract:
The US faces a shortage of primary care physicians. Majority of doctors who graduate each year opt for further training to become specialists, who are accorded more respect and whose jobs are seen as more prestigious than that of primary care physicians. Until the medical community starts treating primary care physicians with respect, the shortage in primary care physicians will continue.
