Payment source and the cost of hospital care: evidence from a multiproduct cost function with multiple payers
Article Abstract:
The capacity of hospitals to exercise discretion in varying the intensity of their services relative to the expected sources of payment of the patient is analyzed. There have been no in-depth studies on how hospitals can reconstruct marginal costs for the payer to signify differences in reimbursement policies. A multiproduct cost function with hospital outputs is used to investigate this. Marginal costs of casemix-adjusted discharges are gathered and compared for Medicare, Medicaid, private payers and a residual category.

Effect of drive-through delivery laws on postpartum length of stay and hospital charges
Article Abstract:
How the length of stay and charges changed following the implementation of postpartum discharge laws passed in the United States from 1995 to 1998 were investigated. The laws increased both lengths of stay and hospital charges as shown by the difference-in-differences model, but the magnitude of this effect is much smaller than has been estimated previously.
