Joining forces: Maine hospitals find that cooperation brings results
Article Abstract:
Maine's Hospital Cooperation Act, signed into law in Jul 1992, has spurred hospitals in that state to participate in cooperative ventures designed to better service their respective communities. Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital in Bridgton, Me, and Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, Me, joined forces to provide a three-member pediatric practice that serves the western region of the state. Other Maine hospitals interested in reducing costs and improving services are participating in cooperative ventures throughout the state.

Hospital develops system to track indigent care
Article Abstract:
St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, NY, developed a clinical information system to track the medical care of indigent, uninsured patients. This network links the hospital with nine inner-city and suburban primary care clinics. Frequently indigent patients use the medical system sporadically, so the information system makes it possible to collect and coordinate data that helps the city provide adequate services and avoid duplication of information. New York State provided a $1.47 million grant to create the software for the network.

1992 receivables improved, but cash flow was weak
Article Abstract:
Hospitals' gross days revenue outstanding for 1992 dropped to an average of 70.8 days for the last quarter. Accounts older than 90-days during the 4th qtr 1992 fell to 27.8% from a high of 30.5% in the 2nd qtr 1992. However, the reduction of gross days revenue outstanding does not necessarily increase cash flow. On the other hand, assigning a case worker to establish whether a patient qualifies for Medicaid helped a hospital reduce its bad debt to less than 1%, compared to the average of 5.2%.
