Health care workers can protect themselves as well as their patients by wearing the appropriate protective clothing, including gloves, masks, and gowns. Also proper handwashing and isolation precautions should be used. Procedures for handling possible infection with HIV are also discussed.

Thorough cleaning of reusable medical equipment is essential before disinfection or sterilization takes place. The proper cleaning techniques are discussed, as are infections that may result if proper cleaning does not proceed sterilization.
