Purchasing: a necessary partnership
Article Abstract:
A hospital's ability to generate a surplus of revenues over expenses can be achieved through proper materiel purchasing. Correct materiel purchasing is described as buying supplies at the right price and not always at the lowest price. Among the objectives of a material management program are cost-effective management, a continuous flow of materiel and services and reduction of inventory costs and losses. Guidelines in choosing suppliers include selecting reputable companies, choosing suppliers through experience or references and the usage of purchasing publications.

Survival depends on effective partnerships with suppliers, management, and physicians
Article Abstract:
Materiel managers can succeed in their profession by focusing on their relationships with external and internal partners. The external partners are the suppliers. There are two main factors in hospital-supplier relationships, a quality-oriented pricing policy and an openness in sharing information. The internal partners are the physicians in using departments. Physicians should be treated as peers whose problems and needs should be listened to and with whom team work should be built.
