QALYs versus HYEs-what's right and what's wrong. A review of the controversy
Article Abstract:
An axiomatic approach in evaluating the cost utility of health care programs was developed in an effort to address the weaknesses of quality-adjusted life years (QALY) and healthy-years equivalent (HYE) models. The proposed approach dwells on the use of a health status annuity device necessary in converting an arbitrary health profile to a constant health status sequence featuring the same length of life. The health status annuity approach inverts the functions of both the quantity and the quality of life in the assessment of health status consequences.

On optimal length of life
Article Abstract:
The model discussed in the 1972 National Bureau of Economic Research monograph and 'Journal of Political Economy' offers a simple but logic framework for the analysis of optimal health paths and longevity. The model involves an assumption that the rate of depreciation on the stock of health increases with age. It also involves an assumption that the optimal stock decreases in relation to age.
