Standardization of orthopedic hip and knee implants
Article Abstract:
The materiel management, orthopedic surgeons, and operating room nursing staff jointly initiated an orthopedic standardization program at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, NY. The program is aimed at standardizing the list price for hip and knee transplants by awarding the contract to a single vendor and establish the hospital as the leading total joint replacement center. The implementation of the standardization program started on March 16, 1994, with the signing of the letter of commitment and concluded with the knee implementation on May 15, 1995.

Materiel executives and the managed care continuum in a capitated environment
Article Abstract:
The trend toward capitation is driving many materiel management professionals in the healthcare sector to form partnerships with suppliers and engage in high-risk programs. Examples of the latter include guaranteed cost reduction, managed cost, shared savings and shared risk contracts. In light of these, material management executives need to become more proactive and risk managers as material management evolves from a hospital function into a function of an integrated healthcare delivery network.

CEO expectations of the pharmacist materiel manager
Article Abstract:
A list of the qualifications that pharmacist materiel managers must have in order to meet CEO expectations is provided. According to estimates, 20% to 25% of the materiel managers in hospitals in the US are pharmacists. To effectively meet CEO expectations, pharmacists, aside from having the requisite education, must possess people and technical skills. When thrust into the materiel management environment, pharmacists are expected to lose some of their clinical skills and CEOs must accept this.
