The butter battle
Article Abstract:
Managers of for-profit and nonprofit hospitals defend their own financial structures and disparage the other's. Supporters of nonprofits oppose the idea of hospital revenues benefiting investors and top executives, while for-profit advocates say nonprofit hospitals also sometimes accumulate capital. However, the public, regulators and other interests see little difference between the two systems. Hospital administrators should worry solely about how well their facilities operate.

Management fads and pay du jour
Article Abstract:
Trends in hospital and health system management include an emphasis on management theories such as continuous quality improvement. These theories were developed to help people work more effectively, but they are not the same as an overall mission and vision of a hospital. Executive compensation plans are also receiving scrutiny; they are an important part of an overall management strategy.
