The response of the dominant firm competition: the Ocean State case
Article Abstract:
The antitrust dispute between Ocean State Physicians Health Plan Inc. (Ocean State) and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode Island (Blue Cross) indicates the strong competition in the health care industry. Although a jury verdict found Blue Cross guilty, the District Court overturned the verdict which was upheld by the Court of Appeals. The higher courts ruled that Blue Cross' use of the most-favored-nation clause, creation of a preferred provider organization similar to Ocean State and its adverse selection policy were legitimate.

Legal nightmare for U.S. health care workers abroad: policy implications
Article Abstract:
U.S. health workers who work abroad are not protected by the US employment law and have to comply with the requirements of a foreign legal system. The 1993 Supreme Court case of Saudi Arabia, King Faisal Specialty Hospital v. Nelson, arose from the Saudi Arabian government's imprisonment and torture of Scott Nelson and its intimidation of his wife. The Nelsons' case may well serve as a reminder to American health care workers, or any American worker for that matter, about the perils of working abroad.

Managing the quality effort in a health care setting: an application
Article Abstract:
The rapid assessment methodology (RAM) is developed for evaluating the quality efforts of healthcare organizations. The RAM emphasizes seven core values including leadership, strategic planning and human resource development. The RAM also differs from total quality management by imposing less time demands on focus group participants and extracting only a few germane dimensions of the Juran measurements. The application of the RAM in a mid-sized, regional tertiary care hospital is discussed.
