An assemble-to-order supply chain strategy usually leads to enhancement of customer service. However, the shift towards an assemble-to-order system needs many new procedures, organizations and skills. Etec Systems, a major provider of patterning solutions for the semiconductor and electronics industries, has established and executed an assemble-to-order system. Companies planning to use the strategy must first see to it that the product designs are structured appropriately and to inform the design department regarding the new options policy.

It allows companies to be more flexible, provide quality products, eradicate unwarranted delays and minimize expenses. Sikorsky Aircraft employed kaizen to enhance its supply base management. The company established its S2000 Supplier Certification Program to establish a world-class continuously improving supplier base; to attain the proper size for the supplier base; and to enhance the suppliers' quality, delivery, lead time and cost effectiveness. According to Sikorsky, a kaizen event is a concentrated effort by a dedicated group to enhance a process in a short period.
