Who's on first - patients or PR?
Article Abstract:
The American Assn of Health Plans introduced its Putting Patients First initiative in Dec 1996. The program intends to streamline administrative procedures, improve the communication between doctors and patients and increase health maintenance organization outcomes research. There is concern by New England Journal of Medicine Editor-in-Chief Jerome P. Kassirer that there is no independent verification that managed care plans are meeting these goals.

United they fell: In New Jersey, 250 MDs are appealing a labor board decision on their union plans
Article Abstract:
The National Labor Relations Board denied a group of New Jersey doctors permission to form a union because they are employees of AmeriHealth HMO. However, about 250 doctors signed cards to join the United Food & Commercial Workers Union. The doctors want more control over patient care, which they believe is based on the institution's financial results rather than patients' health needs.
