10 Commandments for managed competition
Article Abstract:
Many plans for managed healthcare competition have been proposed. For example, a discussion group in Jackson Hole, WY, has popularized the idea, which began with a 1989 article in the 'New England Journal of Medicine.' The article proposed that public sponsors contract health care coverage for the uninsured, just as large companies do now. The sponsors would pay 80% of the most competitive plan offered them, and costs would be subsidized below the 150% poverty level. Guidelines for an American Medical Association proposed healthcare counter-plan are presented.

An earful about why lawyers support process patents
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn's (AMA) objection to process patents is not shared by the legal community. The AMA's position is that patents on medical procedures are unethical, because the primary goal of doctors is to help patients and freely disseminate information toward that end. The lawyer's argument that doctors unfairly benefit from applying unpatented procedures while their originators get nothing has validity. Still, enforcing patented procedures is unrealistic.

Is medicine doing all it can to ensure health and safety?
Article Abstract:
Physicians and hospitals should concern themselves with the broader issues of public health and safety. Physicians should be personally prepared to respond in crisis situations by using CPR and other emergency medical skills. Also, hospitals could help clean up inner-city neighborhoods and sponsor programs to help children or other at-risk populations. Such efforts could help reduce the incidence of traumatic injuries and other medical problems.
