9 public officials receive AMA Nathan Davis Awards
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association (AMA) recognized nine government officials on Nov 20, 1996, for their contributions toward public health. The Nathan Davis Awards went to Sen. Connie Mack of Florida, Rep. John Porter of Illinois, Georgia Lt. Gov. Pierre Howard, Air Force Surgeon General E. Ratcliffe Anderson Jr., Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director David Satcher, Florida state Sen. William G. Myers, Delaware state Rep. Jane Perkins Marone, Texas Health Commissioner David R. Smith, and F. Brobson Lutz Jr., former director of the health department in New Orleans, LA.

Legislation '98: from patient rights to Medicare reform fights
Article Abstract:
Congress is considering many different bills that would create dramatic changes in the managed care industry. The Patient Access to Responsible Care Act would remove malpractice lawsuit protections for managed care companies. The Patient Right to Know Act would forbid managed care firms from limiting the information physicians provide to patients. Medicare reforms are also pending.
