A clean sweep
Article Abstract:
Childhood encopresis is the term used when faeces is passed in places other than the toilet. The condition affects around 1.5% of young school children, with boys being six times more likely to be affected than girls. Treatment programmes are not used on children with underlying medical or psychological problems. However, children over four years old who have learnt inappropriate toilet behaviour or who have a toilet phobia can be treated. Training programmes are designed for each child, and the various types of treatments, such as incentive schemes and desensitization, are discussed.

Clinical outcomes for nurse-led in-patient care
Article Abstract:
A pilot experimental study to measure the impact of transfer to a nurse-led unit from a medically led ward found there was a much lower incidence of pressure sores, chest infections and urinary tract infections. The results show that no harm is caused by giving nurses responsibility for care, and further study will determine how the improved outcomes are being achieved.

To believe or not to believe
Article Abstract:
Quoted nursing research findings should be treated with caution as subjective interpretation may be misleading. Some researchers may overemphasise the significance of their work. They may also use statistics selectively to substantiate a theory. Individual conclusions should be based on original research where possible.
