The BCG vaccine can only prevent active tuberculosis in those who have never acquired the bacteria, but one-third of the world's population has already been exposed to TB. The vaccine should be given at a young age.

Research on tuberculosis is needed because drug-resistant strains are spreading and HIV infections are also contributing to an increase in cases. Vaccines, diagnosis and new drug therapies are discussed.
