A comparison of nebulized budesonide, intramuscular dexamethasone, and placebo for moderately severe croup
Article Abstract:
Children with croup may benefit from budesonide or dexamethasone. These drugs belong to the group known as corticosteroids. Researchers randomly assigned 144 children with croup to receive aerosolized budesonide, intramuscular dexamethasone or a placebo. Over a five-hour period following treatment, the children who received budesonide or dexamethasone had a greater improvement in symptoms than those who received a placebo. Hospitalization rates were also substantially lower in the children who received corticosteroids.

Nebulized budesonide and oral dexamethasone for treatment of croup: a randomized controlled trial
Article Abstract:
Dexamethasone appears to be the preferred treatment for croup because of its low cost and availability. Croup is an upper respiratory disease characterized by hoarseness, difficulty breathing and a barking cough. Researchers randomly assigned 197 children with croup to receive dexamethasone, budesonide or both drugs. The outcome in all three groups was similar. Since dexamethasone is more readily available in emergency departments, it may be the drug of choice for treating croup.

A randomized trial of a single dose of oral dexamethasone for mild croup
Article Abstract:
A doubled-blind trial at four pediatric emergency departments is conducted in which 720 children with mild croup are randomly assigned to receive one oral dose of either dexamethasone or placebo. Dexamethasone for children with mild croup proves to be an effective treatment that results in consistent and small but important clinical and economic benefits.
