Us government agencies have begun setting stricter standards, and called for serious sanctions against journal authors who flout disclosure guidelines, with respect to their financial interests in their work. Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington-based advocacy group, is one of the agencies keeping a close vigilance on the issue and has called for a three-year publication ban on journal authors who flout disclosure guideline.

The U.S National Institutes of Health's (NIH) latest regulations are likely to harm the interactions between scientists and outside entities that turn scientific findings into treatments. The regulations have put strict restrictions on the outside activities of the NIH scientists, including banning them from engaging in paid or unpaid consulting for industry, health care providers or universities.

Woo-Suk Hwang, a veterinarian by training and a prominent scientist in Korea, fell into disfavor with bioethicists amid questions over whether a graduate student in his lab donated eggs for his experiments. Critics believe that the government is using Hwang's fame to promote science and is reluctant to investigate anything that might tarnish his reputation.
