Lasker awards honor physicians, scientists, senator

Albert Lasker Medical Research awards have been granted to seven people. Barry J. Marshall, MD, was given the Clinical Medical Research Award for his discovery that peptic ulcer disease is caused by a bacterium. Five scientists, Emil R. Unanue, Rolf M. Zinkernagel, Peter C. Doherty, Don C. Wiley and Jack L. Strominger were jointly given the Basic Medical Research Award, and Sen Mark O. Hatfield was given the Public Service Award.

The 1996 Albert Lasker awards were presented to seven distinguished medical researchers. Awards were presented to doctors Robert F. Furchgott, Ferid Murad, Porter Warren Anderson, Jr., David Hamilton Smith, John B. Robbins, Rachel Schneerson and Paul C. Zamecnik. Award recipients receive a citation, honorarium and statuette of the Winged Victory of Samothrace.
