A lesson in litigation
Article Abstract:
A British nurse describes her experience of working in a busy hospital on the west coast of Florida. She has the misfortune to be involved in the nursing care of a women patient recovering from a laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy who subsequently dies following infection and complications. On her return to the U.K., she finds that she has been accused of misconduct and failing to follow the physician's instructions. The investigation raises her own doubts about her nursing capabilities and she loses much of her previous confidence. Finally, she is cleared of all charges, but the episode has left a permanent scar.

Developing a reflective standard of care
Article Abstract:
Reflective care standards are a method of understanding responses to situations and ensuring appropriate action is taken. Nurses can be taught to use reflective care when dealing with patients who may not fully understand the situation they are in. Mentally ill patients may become aggressive and nurses can learn to assess and interpret certain responses and act accordingly to minimize aggression and calm the situation. The standard is a management tool by which nurses can ensure best practice is provided.
