A light goes out
Article Abstract:
The London-based Lighthouse HIV/AIDS centre is to close during the autumn of 1998, because local health authorities are choosing to send patients to less expensive clinics in an attempt to save money on their 15 million pounds sterling combination therapy budgets. The decision has lead to a fall in the number of patients being treated and the redundancy of more than half of the highly trained staff. The centre was opened in 1987 as a charitable institution which focused on the care and treatment AIDs sufferers.

Men get raped too
Article Abstract:
The incidence of male rape is increasing and it is on the agenda for the RCN Congress in March 1999. Nurses want more services to be available for men who have been raped. They want to overcome the misconception that it is impossible to rape a man, or that gay men do it to heterosexual men. Nurses may be the first person a victim encounters after an attack but they may find it hard to discuss because they are embarrassed. Victims need support because they can experience relationship problems and depression.

Prejudice: it's a fair cop
Article Abstract:
The European Association of Nurses in AIDS Care Conference, held in Malta in October 1999, highlighted the prejudice and lack of knowledge of homosexuality and AIDS in the nursing profession. At the conference, news of research into HIV post-exposure prophylaxis, was announced. The treatment involves bad side effects and is given to health professionals only if they have been exposed to infected fluid, perhaps by needlestick injuries. Nurses have mixed views on the use of the treatment for patients.
