A long time coming
Article Abstract:
Three UK government documents issued in 1998 emphasize the role which community nurses could play in promoting public health. However, community nurses have a number of issues to address before they can rise to the challenge. They need to overcome traditional prejudices and contractual arrangements, and they have to consider their training requirements. A public health training module would incorporate a range of theoretical and practical elements including study of the political framework, epidemiology, advocacy skills and the compilation of needs profiles.

The Public Health Alliance's criteria for developing a public health model including changing the focus of primary care to include the community and extending primary care to include non-medical first contact services.
