Treatment protocol effectiveness study: a white paper of the Office of National Drug Control Policy
Article Abstract:
There are evidences that drug abuse treatment works. The effectiveness of treatment modalities, however, is dependent on the interplay of various factors which include, among others, choice of setting for carrying out the therapeutic intervention, type of treatment, type of drug addicted to, history of drug abuse, previous drug treatments, social needs, criminal record, economic status and personality characteristics. The treatment modality for each individual thus needs to be carefully evaluated and tailor-made for it to work effectively.

Acupuncture: new perspectives in chemical dependency treatment
Article Abstract:
The history of auricular acupuncture as used in the chemical dependency treatment is reviewed. Acupuncture may be useful as an adjunctive treatment for alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Moreover, it can be used as an entry point to treatment in nontreatment settings such as shelters and prisons. Prepartum and postpartum women may also benefit more from auricular acupuncture since the drugs used for detoxification are teratogenic.
