Decision tree for the management of substance-abusing psychiatric patients
Article Abstract:
A psychiatric facility was able to develop a decision tree for patients found abusing alcohol or drugs during confinement. Substance abusers were grouped into two, new abusers and known abusers. The decision tree helped hospital staff decide whether to discharge or retain substance abusing patients. Prior to the use of the tree, staff reacted negatively by either prematurely discharging the abuser or avoiding the problem.

The power of language
Article Abstract:
Language plays an important role in the field of substance abuse treatment. For instance, words and phrases such as waiting list, relapse, aftercare, loss of control, craving and confrontation may have unintended negative effects on patients. In this light, professionals should be careful when using certain terms because they may have unconscious implications that may affect clients, students and even themselves.
