A national bill of patients' rights
Article Abstract:
President Clinton proposed a national bill of rights in health care during his State of the Union address in 1998. This will attempt to codify the rights of medical patients, some of which have been established in courtrooms. Court opinions, beginning in the 1970's, upheld the right of patients to informed consent, freedom of choice, privacy, and the right to refuse treatment. Managed care plans have sought to change the doctor-patient relationship to that of a business transaction. Legislative actions should expand patient rights, then expand access to care.

The patient's right to safety: Improving the quality of care through litigation against hospitals
Article Abstract:
The view of experts about hospitals that do not take specific actions to improve safety should be subject to malpractice lawsuits when a violation of the right to safety results in injury is presented. Legal actions that are focused on patient-safety systems in hospitals, rather than on the actions of individual physicians, could help encourage more serious consideration of other reforms as well.

"Culture of life" politics at the bedside - The case of Terri Schiavo
Article Abstract:
Terri Schiavo, a patient suffering from a stroke attack, created history in United States by bringing Congress to hold an emergency session to pass a legislation aimed at her medical care. This case has helped many such similar cases to follow suit and receive protection from the targets of family and society that are against their survival chances.
