A nice place to grow old?
Article Abstract:
There is a wide variation in the standard of care for elderly people across the UK. In some areas of London, for example, elderly people living in sheltered housing have access to a free 24-hour warden service, while in other parts of London local authorities charge for community care. Most local authorities throughout the UK now charge for community care, with the charges varying considerably. Many social service departments are unable to meet the needs of an ageing population, especially as their budgets are constantly reduced.

An alien place. (patient experience)
Article Abstract:
A patient describes her experience in an intensive care unit and the period leading up to her operation to remove a tumour. She recalls seeing dream-like images during recovery and her fear of complete dependence on the staff. Communication became her measurement of recovery and writing words on paper was her most important method of communication whilst on a ventilator. She recalls how time appear interminable and day and night indistinguishable, and describes the importance of the support given by the palliative care team.
