Heart murmurs: are older male dental patients aware of their existence?
Article Abstract:
The authors determined that older male dental patients (as compared to younger male patients) are less likely to be aware of a heart murmur. Such a condition might require antibiotic therapy prior to procedure to prevent bacterial endocarditis. Obviously, ignorance of the fact and inability to inform the dentist of it puts the patient at higher risk.
