A nose for trouble
Article Abstract:
Nurses in acute settings are familiar with nasogastric tube-feeding, but the procedure presents challenges requiring careful thought. The choice of tube design should match the circumstances. Viscous feeds, for example, require an 8FR tube, whilst a 6FR tube is suitable for standard feeds. The nurse should interact calmly with the patient who is to have the tube inserted, and should ensure that the patient has the correct body position. The nurse should tape the tube securely, confirm that it is correctly positioned by measuring the acidity of aspiration, and flush the tube regularly.
