A personalised splint for osteoarthritis
Article Abstract:
The quality of life for patients with osteoarthritis of the thumb (carpo-metacarpal) joint could be improved through use of a personalised static splint, according to research. The splint, made from a thermoplastic material, was tested by 13 women aged 45-70 years. The level of pain brought on by certain daily activities was measured by the women, with levels falling substantially after a week and then a month for all activities apart from lifting a teapot. Pain relief improved a little or remained constant during the next 11 months. The thumb was immobilised in partial opposition by the splint, with the interphalangeal and wrist joints left free.

Tackling pain
Article Abstract:
A trial of symptomatic treatment for osteoarthritis has proved the value of physical procedures. The trail aimed to establish whether realigning the patella with tape would give relief to patients with patellofemoral compartment osteoarthritis of the knee. Foureteen patients participated. The tape was applied in medial, lateral and neutral positions. Pain diaries revealed greater relief from medial positioning. Assessment revealed a 25% pain reduction. Patients also preferred lateral taping.

Update on glucosamine for osteoarthritis
Article Abstract:
Glucosamine may benefit some patients with osteoarthritis but the quality of the pills may vary depending on who manufactures it. This makes it very difficult to test it against other treatments for osteoarthritis. One positive feature of glucosamine is that it has very few side effects.
