A modified Burch procedure and a suburethral sling appear to be equally effective in treating urinary stress incontinence. This was the conclusion of a study of 36 women.

Protective effect of suburethral slings on postoperative cystocele recurrence after reconstructive pelvic operation

A suburethral sling can prevent the formation of cystoceles after surgery for pelvic organ prolapse, according to a study of 148 women. Prolapse occurs whenever an organ moves away from its original position.
